Lothar Schmid was born in 1953 in Les Grisons, Switzerland. He studied at the Fine Arts school in Zürich, then became assistant photographer in Zürich, Milan and Paris.

He started as a photographer in 1973 for Elle France, collaborating with Peter Knapp.

Lothar Schmid now works in Paris and New York among others. His main clients are: ELLE France and international editions, Marie Claire France, Figaro Madame, Vogue GB, Vogue USA, GQ USA, New York Times, Yves St. Laurent, Guerlain, La Roche Posay, Vichy, Lancel, Cointreau aso. He is also well-known for his portraits of movie stars.
